Technical Question- How Can I Determine Accurate Fuel Consumption For My Car?

There are many reasons as to why it’s important to know your car’s fuel consumption. Basically, the key top reason is to help you improve your car’s fuel efficiency. But, to be able you do that, you have to be knowledgeable about the right way of doing your vehicle’s fuel consumption calculation:

The first step is to find out the number of kilometers you get out of a full tank of fuel. This is greatly determined by one’s driving practices and how fuel efficient they are on the road. Thus, to calculate the distance covered, you would have to first make sure that the tank is empty. Also, you would need to take the odometer reading (in kilometers) before the tank is refilled.

Next, completely refuel the tank. Take note of the number of liters used to fill the tank to the brim.

Once the tank is empty, check the odometer reading again. By now, you will have gotten the necessary data to enable you do your fuel consumption calculation.

So assuming that the first odometer reading was 35,000km, and the second was 35,800km, to calculate the amount of fuel consumed, you would need to subtract 35,000 from 35,800 which equal 800 km. Then, assuming that it took 60 liters to refill the tank, the next step would be to divide the number of liters consumed by the total distance travelled (60liters ÷ 800km).

60 liters ÷ 800 km = 0.075

In other words, the right fuel consumption calculation formula to adopt is:

FC = D (km) ÷ F (l) X 100

Lastly, to get the total fuel consumption, multiply this figure by 100 (0.075 X 100) = 7.5 liters per every 100 km.

As such, the total fuel consumption within the above specified driving period would be 7.5 liters per 100km.

Knowing this simple fuel consumption calculation comes in handy as it can enable you come up with measures to help you improve your fuel efficiency.
